Spinalonga had long been on our list of places to see, but it wasn't to be. During the summer months there is a stream of boats taking tourists over to explore the island where the poor lepers had been kept, but it is closed from the end of October. I wasn't too sad as it has such a chequered past. It is unfortunate that it is now so famous for its unhappy period, rather than for its days of being a major Venetian fortress.
Looking back to Elounda from the island
Who knows who used to bath in this but it was impressively large and now sits outside a little chapel .
Spinalonga island and some of the houses the lepers had lived in.
We instead spent a lovely day on 'big' Spinalonga which is an islet off Elounda joined by a causeway. We walked several kilometers over the top which was very unspoilt, seemingly covered in ruins from some earlier period. Today it was only us, and unusually many small birds. There are quite a few martins and swallows around. Maybe residents?
Don't know why Alec is wearing so many clothes, it was very warm!
We had spotted a good beach very near our hotel in Ag Nic so drove back there, and had an excellent late lunch. - always dangerous and we ate far too much , so when it came to going out to supper we weren't hungry! We returned to last night's restaurant and were really quite restrained for us!
We now rather like Agios Nikolaus and it is very convenient staying in such a central hotel.
View from our balcony
My very own Daniel Craig !
