Today we decided that it was to be a bit of culture followed by swimming and sun bathing. So we bought a few postcards and then headed for the beach! No not exactly, Frangokastello has a very impressive Venetian fort, it is rectangular and has a tower at each corner. The Venetians built it to try and discipline the very ferocious Sfakion locals and also to protect themselves from the pirates who were in control of the coastline. Apparently it didn't really work and as fast as they built the castle, the locals would come at night and dismantle what they'd done and the pirates just went on pirating!
So they had to mount a 24 hour guard to eventually finish it, but then some time later the Turks came and captured it anyway and hung 7 rebel brothers outside the main gate as a warning to anyone else who might think of being a nuisance
Inside there was a very interesting and descriptive display of paintings which showed all the different aspects of daily life in the surrounding area.
That done we settled on the sandy beach and some time later took lunch in a taverna which came up with a delicious fennel salad which was to die for! In the afternoon a cold breeze got up and there was a bit of thunder and lightening about so we retired home
to read!
Once again we ate in the hotel's taverna and once again the owner generously plied us with quantities of his home made raki which is we've decided as good as Cointreau for guaranteeing a decent nights sleep. zzzzzzzzz!
